Prep Your Car for Wintry Road Conditions

(NewsUSA) – Auto breakdowns in winter storms are not only
dangerous, they can be deadly.

Having your vehicle serviced before the cold weather sets in is important for peace
of mind and personal safety. The experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service
Excellence, known as ASE, offer the following tips:

* Refer to the owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended service
schedules.

* Have engine problems corrected now, because cold weather makes existing problems
worse.

* Replace all dirty filters. Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual.

* Have the cooling system flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition and
concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. * Ask a certified auto technician to
check the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps and hoses.

* Make sure the heater and defroster are in good working condition to prevent
dangerous window fogging.

* For routine battery care, scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections;
clean all surfaces; and re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid
level monthly. (Wear eye and skin protection.)

* Have your vehicle's exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and
floorboards should be inspected for small holes as well. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

* Check your tires for cuts, nicks and uneven wear patterns. Check the tires'
pressure once a month, letting the tires cool down first. Worn tires will be of little use in
winter weather.

If it doesn't snow much in your area, ASE recommends that you still get your vehicle
serviced this season. Periodic maintenance increases the life of your car and improves gas
mileage.

ASE was founded to improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the
voluntary testing and certification of automotive professionals. ASE-certified technicians wear
blue and white shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact areas of certification.

They can be found at all types of repair facilities, from dealerships to independent garages
and franchises. Repair shops with certified professionals often display the ASE sign.
