Internet Telephone Service Treats Service Personnel to Free Calls

(NewsUSA) – To military personnel serving far from home,
there's no more welcome sound than a loved-one's voice on the other end of the phone. But making
calls from some parts of the world can be difficult and expensive. And that's why one Internet
telephone company is offering men and women in the Armed Services two months of free service and a
free router.

Holmdel, N.J.-based Vonage -; a leading provider of broadband telephone services with
2.4 million subscriber lines -; began offering the free service in May, Military Appreciation
Month.

With an Internet telephone service, or VoIP, your phone connects over the Internet
using a broadband connection and modem. An adapter plugs into the modem and translates the
electrical pulses from the phone into IP packets that travel over the Internet. The service works
with any home phone using a standard telephone jack. Calls generally sound like they're being made
from a conventional landline phone.

Most Internet phone companies offer a wealth of features. For instance, Vonage's
service includes caller ID with the caller's name, voice mail, call forwarding and call
waiting.

With Vonage, phone numbers are portable virtually anywhere there is broadband, so you
can use your home phone number. Another great feature with Vonage is the ability to have more than
one telephone and area code. For an additional fee, you can set up a "virtual number"-; a secondary
number tied to your main Vonage line, that can have any available area code. That means your family
and friends can call you for the price of a local call if you choose a virtual number in their area
code.

For many people, though, the price of Internet telephone service is even more attractive
than the features. Most companies offer unlimited local and long-distance calls, and international
calls can also be considerably less expensive than regular phone service.

Vonage customer Steven Reents, a contracted civilian at Illinois National Guard, Camp
Lincoln, says the service has made a real difference to his telephone bills.

"With unlimited long distance, my children can call their friends no matter where they
are, my wife can talk as long as she wants with her family in Chicago and I have peace of mind
actually knowing I can afford my phone bill each month," says Reents.
