David Beckham wanted so much to become the first player to appear in four World Cups for England. He was close before tearing his left Achilles’ tendon Sunday while playing for AC Milan, an injury that will cause him to miss soccer’s premier tournament and most if not all of the Los Angeles Galaxy’s season.

Junior forward Lavoy Allen walked to midcourt seconds after the final buzzer in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship game, smiled and raised three fingers. Mawae re-elected as NFLPA president (AP)
Free agent center Kevin Mawae was unanimously re-elected as president of the NFL Players Association during the union’s board of player representatives meeting Saturday. Mawae, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, will serve his second straight two-year term beginning this season after the voting was announced in Maui with more than 100 players in attendance.
