Adolescent Athletic Injuries Can be Avoided!

Many adolescent sports injuries happen at the start of the season. This is often the result of doing “too much, too soon, too fast” or in other words, not being properly prepared. Here are some simple tips for your teens that can help prevent most injuries throughout the year.

Six Keys of Injury Prevention:
1. Practice “pre-habilitation” instead of rehabilitating injuriesrestoring injured parts to normal functionprevent injuries by strengthening at risk muscle groups:
If you participate in a sport that demands the same movement over and over (such as swimming, tennis, or pitching a ball), talk to your coach several months before your sports season to devise a strengthening program for these specific muscle groups.

2. Follow the 10% rule:
Slowly increase your training load or mileage at the start of the season. Tendonitis, stress fractures, and most other injuries may result from a sudden increase in training load or stress. Do not increase the intensity or volume of your training by more than 10% per week. For example, runners who run an average of 20 miles a week should increase that to no more than 22 miles the following week, then to about 24.5 miles the following week. And so on. Be smart, and increase slowly! Your body adapts to the stress much better that way!

3. Stay active all year long:
Even if you participate in only one competitive sport, you should stay physically active throughout the year. Running, biking, swimming, fitness training and other activities are excellent ways to maintain conditioning and avoid the need to play “catch-up” when your sport season begins.

4. Learn to warm up and cool down: Prevent pulled muscles by walking briskly or jogging for 5 minutes and then stretching for 10 to 15 minutes before practices and games. Following the same jogging and stretching routine after activity can decrease muscle soreness. Early inflammation or soreness after your cool down can be alleviated with icing for at least 15 minutes.

5. Prevent dehydration:
Dehydration is simply loss of water from the body and can result from sweating during athletic activities, especially in hot weather. It can lead to dangerous heat illness. Drink water before, during, and after all practices and games to avoid dehydration. Cool water is best because it is more rapidly absorbed from the stomach. A good guide is as follows:
- Drink 16 oz of water 30 to 60 minutes before activity.
- Drink 4 to 8 oz of water every 15 to 30 minutes during activity.
- Drink 16 oz of water for every 1 lb of weight lost after activity. (weighing yourself before and after activity during hot weather workout programs really helps to maintain hydration)
Sports drinks or electrolyte replacement supplements such as Gatorade and PowerAde are only really needed for very intense activity lasting longer than 90 minutes.

6. Don’t skimp on nutrition:
A good diet is essential to peak athletic performance. It helps maintain strong bones, avoid anemia, and build muscle. Make sure that you have a good balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats. Eating a high protein meal like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a protein shake within 30 minutes after exercise improves your muscle building. Remember that the daily protein intake recommendation for athletes is 2g/kg/day as compared to non-athletes of 0.8g/kg/day.

Most athletic injuries can be prevented, especially in the adolescent competitive sports environment. Avoiding too much, too soon, too fast repetitive stress injuries by following these helpful tips!

Rules for Adolescents- What is Negotiable and What is Not

All parents know that negotiating and discussing rules and regulations with children is not an easy task. All children are different, and a rule that applies for one child might not at all apply for another. There are however, some rules that hold good for all children and there is no room for wiggling out of them. These rules are pertaining to the child’s health, well being and protection. It is very important to define the consequences of these rules to the child from the beginning so that the child does not misunderstand the reasons and consequences to a rule.

The rules relating to the safety and protection of our children are of vital importance. These could range from teaching your child not to hold hot stoves to teaching them to obey laws when on their bicycle. You need to make it clear to your child that he or she has no choice but to follow these rules all the time and there can be no negotiation for such rules.

When it comes to older children like teenagers and adolescents, the rules might include parameters regarding drinking, usage of drugs and safe defensive driving. Such rules are vital to protect the child’s safety, well being and health. The child should understand that there is absolutely no room for relaxing the rules and experimentation in particular social situations.

Apart from these rules, there are also rules that come under the category of those that are negotiable with out children. These include rules on how many hours a day a child can spend playing video games, the curfew by which a child should be home for dinner, when homework can be completed or how late a teenage child is allowed to come home on a weekend night. These rules should all be discussed in an honest and open manner with your child. However, it is important to exercise consistency. It is not fair if you say eleven p.m. one night and nine thirty p.m. another night as the return time when your child is going out with the same group of people. In case a curfew was broken on one night, the consequences of the violation on the next weekend night must be firmly enforced. Never bend a rule just because your child insists that he or she is genuinely sorry about the violation. It is very important to follow through with consequences that are fair and consistent.

Sprains and Strains in Adolescents

Sprains and strains are among the majority of the injuries caused while playing sports. Sports injuries can be caused by small trauma which involves ligaments, muscles and tendons including bruises, sprains and strains. The body part which is most commonly involved in spraining or straining is the ankle. The 3 ligaments that are involved during ankle sprain or strain include anterior talofubular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament.

An injury caused to the soft tissue as a result of a direct force like fall, kick and blow is called a contusion or a bruise. A sprain is nothing but a ligament injury which is wrenched or twisted. Sprains usually affect knees, wrists and ankles. On the other hand a strain is an injury caused to a tendon or muscle which usually results from force, stretching and overuse.

Sprains/Strains are usually diagnosed by a physician after a physical examination. The physician asks for thorough medical history of the adolescent and asks various questions that lead to the cause of the injury. Various diagnostic procedures are also available which also helps in evaluating the problem. X-ray is one of the oldest and common diagnostic tests done to know the extent and exact location of the injury. An x-ray uses electromagnetic waves to get photos of internal tissues, organs and bones onto a film. MRI scan is one of the recently evolved diagnostic procedures which also help in evaluating a physical injury. This procedure actually called Magnetic Resonance Imaging makes use of bug magnets, computer and radio frequencies to get detailed pictures of structures and organs inside the body. Another diagnostic procedure called Computed Tomography Scan or CT scan is also used to evaluate the extent and location of injury. This procedure uses a blend of computers and x-rays to get cross sectional pictures in horizontal and vertical alignment. It shows thorough pictures of any part of the body like muscles, bones, fat and organs. They provide more information than conventional x-rays.

There are various symptoms of strain and sprain depending on each teen’s physical condition and they may vary accordingly. One of the symptoms includes pain in and around the area injury. There could also be a swelling around the injured area. Some teens also experience difficulty when they use or move the area of the body that is injured. Some teenagers also undergo bruises or redness in the area that is injured. Many times the symptoms of sprains and strains may look similar to other medical conditions and a doctor’s advice is the best option in this scenario.

Depending on various factors the treatment of sprains and strains will be prescribed by the teenager’s physician that include teenager’s age, overall health of the teenager, and medical history of the adolescent. To what extent the teen is injured is also a factor in determining the nature of treatment. A teenager’s level of tolerance to certain medications, therapies and procedures is also taken into consideration before opting for a particular method of treatment. The treatment also depends of what expectations one has and also preference and opinion.

Various options available for treatment include things like restriction of the activity after the injury, application of cast/splint on the injured spot, crutches or wheelchair, physical therapy which involves stretching exercises to give strength to the muscles, tendons and ligaments that are injured and last but not the least is the surgery which is opted for in worst case scenario.

In the long-term scenario bruises, sprains and strains heal pretty quickly in kids and teenagers but it is important that the adolescent sticks to the restrictions imposed during the treatment and healing process like restriction of activity and regularly attending physical therapy sessions if any. It is noted that majority of the sports related injuries results either due to traumatic injury or excessive use of muscles and joints. But, they can be avoided and prevented with right training, by wearing right protective gears and by using right equipment for training.

Help Underprivileged Children, They Need Aid!

Every child is special and he or she deserves to achieve his growth and dreams in a healthy surrounding. He or she should not be devoid of his or her primary rights. It is a birth right of a child to enjoy his or her primary rights (as per the constitution).

Each child deserves to grow up in a healthy environment where he gets access to health related facilities such as quality integrated water and sanitation services. Underprivileged children’s charity organizations work for unaided children to access to such healthy environs. They promote and provide these impoverished children a better upbringing in which they can attain their full potential to lead a meaningful life in the future.

Various non-profit organizations help children in India who are leading a miserable life. These organizations raise funds from various bodies and firms and utilize the same for the well-being of underprivileged children. They enable various deprived children as well as their families and communities to meet the primary needs. They also help in building the ability of these children to participate and benefit from the societies. They come up with various encouraging steps that help in promoting the interest of underprivileged children to fight the odds.

Charity for children is an encouraging step to help impoverished children attain and rise up to a better living standard. The various charity organizations ensure lasting development in the quality of life of deprived children in various developing countries. They operate through a process, which unifies people across cultures. They further add importance and value to the lives of vulnerable children.

One alarming subject about underprivileged children (in terms of gender issue) is the status of girl child. Underprivileged girl children are in grave danger than underprivileged boy child. Girl child often tend to become a victim of human trafficking. The role of various non-profit organizations in this context is highly appreciative. They provide various awareness campaigns, which eradicate their ignorance about different related issues. Various training and vocational courses are also provided to help girl child ensure a better living standard with hope and confidence.

Ranges of organizations, which provide charity for children, are dedicated to provide a better living standard to orphan and abandoned children. They cater to the physical and educational needs of these children. Moreover, they ensure these underprivileged children to become meaningful leaders of the future generation. Underprivileged children’s charities provide meals and education, medical assistance and educational facilities (along with hygiene facilities). They are committed to build long-term community benefits for vulnerable children.

Charity organizations, which help children in India, strive to eradicate social and economic inequalities. For this particular mission, they are dedicated to work for the well-being of impoverished children. They help underprivileged children since they are aware that these children need aid. We can also generate this awareness amongst ourselves now so that the society is eradicated from any inequality- political, social or economical. Children are the building blocks of a society we must help them achieve their dreams for a meaningful tomorrow.

Smoking Related Health Problems in Adolescents

Smoking is the cause of many diseases and kills about four hundred and forty two thousand people every year in the United States. In spite of anti smoking campaigns and billboard warnings, more and more people are joining the bandwagon of smokers every year. Out of the total number of new smokers, ninety percent are children and adolescents, replacing smokers who have quit or died early due to a disease caused by smoking. Smoking is the top cause of preventable and premature deaths, followed by obesity.

Smoking not only increases the risk of lung disease, but also increases the risk of contracting lung cancer, oral cancer, emphysema, stroke and heart disease. Certain statistics by the American Lung Associations show alarming results. Over five thousand adolescents smoke their very first cigarette every day, out of which over two thousand turn into regular smokers. Presently there are nearly five million adolescents smokers. Twenty percent of the twelfth graders smoke cigarettes regularly.

Smoking has many harmful affects on the health of a human being. It damages the cardiovascular system, causes high blood pressure, increases heart rate, increases the risk of ischemic stroke, increases the risk of formation of blood clot formation, and decreases the oxygen amount which reaches the tissues in the body, reduces coronary blood flow & cardiac output, and damages the blood vessels. Smoking not only affects physical health, but mental health too. It causes psychological distress and depression.

Smoking not only affects the person who smokes but also other people who surround him/her. According to the American Heart Association, nearly thirty five thousand passive smokers die of smoke inhaled from a lit pipe, cigar or cigarette. People who do not smoke directly and inhale smoke from a cigarette smoke by his/her neighbor is known as passive smoker, secondary smoker or indirect smoker. Among the passive smokers, women, children and infants are at a higher risk. Infants and children who are exposed to smoke develop asthma, frequent ear infections and may even experience infant death syndrome. The symptoms experienced by secondary smokers are coughing, excess mucus formation in the airways, chest discomfort, chest pain, and lung irritation. They even feel irritation of throat, nose and eyes. If the passive smokers experiences chest pain, it can be an indication of a heart disease. Sometimes the symptoms of secondary smoking can coincide with the symptoms of other medical conditions. Hence, it is recommended to contact the doctor immediately after the surfacing of the symptoms.

In active smokers, smoking, apart from building up high cholesterol in blood, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, high blood pressure, physical inactivity and diabetes. So smoking cessation will not only reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, which is top of the list, but also decreases the risk by fifty percent of heart attacks and deaths caused by it. But quitting smoking undertakes lots of physical and mental efforts. The person should be made mentally relaxed and stress free. In case of adolescents, they can be asked to exercise regularly and sleep adequately. The American Lung Association and The American Academy of Otolaryngology have developed certain tips which can be of great help to the smokers who are thinking of quitting. The smokers must first be made to understand the reason for quitting. Stress only makes even more difficult to quit smoking, so a stress free period should be chosen to quit. Family and friends’ encouragement and support are extremely necessary to persuade the smoker to quit. If the support isn’t sufficient, smokers can join a smoking cessation program or a support group to attain their goals. A balanced diet is a must, along with lots of rest.

Sometimes taking nicotine replacement products, such as nicotine chewing gum, nicotine inhalers, and nicotine patch, are a great help to smokers who want to quit. By using these products the smokers can satisfy their nicotine craving. The good thing is that these nicotine replacement products can deduct the poisonous gases and tars emitted by the cigarettes. But nursing and pregnant women should consult a doctor before trying nicotine replacement products. For such people non-nicotine alternative is available in the market.

Every toddler goes through the stage where they want nothing but “O”-shaped cereal. The challenge for parents is getting kids to ask for fruit salad instead of cupcakes. Faced with this seemingly impossible task with her own child, Jennifer Carden has created The Toddler Caf , a guide to making mealtime with children fun and interactive. It offers simple, creative ways for kids to identify with their food, like saying tuna salad is what mermaids eat, or making Minty Pea Pops in ice cube trays. Carden has created over 50 unique recipes that encourage families (including toddlers) to work together to prepare, eat, clean up, and best of all, look forward to a healthy, delicious meal.

Preventing Children From Viewing Unsafe Content

The computer has opened the doors to the many types of things which can be done either online or offline. As such, there may be no specific way for parents to know what their children are doing online. Today, websites amount to the thousands of millions on the Internet, so it’s obvious, preventing children from viewing all sorts of stuffs can be very difficult.

Some parents are strict with their children about using the Internet as they are aware about how their habits and lifestyles can be changed. On the other hand, other parents do not exert this authority, hence allowing children to view what they want on the Internet. While some parents allow their children a computer in their bedroom, others prefer the living room. The bedroom represents privacy, so children can be tempted to do as they wish. Alternately, the living room is a very accessible place, hence preventing children from viewing stuffs such as adult content on the Internet.

If you have already explained your children about the various things that they can see on the Internet which does not suit their age, then it depends on how much you trust them. Some children might tell you they have never seen or been to unsafe sites while others will simply lie to you. Some children easily lie to their parents because of the latter’s ignorance in Internet issues. Fortunately, even if you cannot stop your children to view all the negative websites, there are ways to limit the sites they can access. Security levels are available and can be installed on web browsers to prevent children from visiting improper websites.

With the advent of Windows Vista, Microsoft has enhanced the operating system’s security level. So, this means that children may find it hard to access all sorts of websites while they surf the web. A great thing parents can do is to create their personal account on their children’s computer. Every time the children want to use their computer, they have to request their parents for the username and the password which remains secret. You as the parent must make sure that you have the highest control on the computer to better monitor your children.

With an administrator account, you will be able to know what your children have been doing online and what sites they have accessed. Also, you will have the ability to see what files your children have saved or worked with. In brief, you will have an overview about how your children are using their computer. Besides, letting your children aware that you will be keeping an eye on them, they may most probably feel reluctant to see and do unsafe things on their computer.

Another good way to know what your children are doing is to frequently have a look at the history. The computer will always keep a history about the things which have been done during the day, unless the children delete them. For this reason, having full control over the computer is imperative.

Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Baby Wipes are made with your baby, and your environment, in mind. Unlike conventional baby wipes, Seventh Generation Wipes are not bleached with chemicals containing chlorine, and don’t contain alcohol, fragrance, or synthetic ingredients that may irritate baby’s sensitive skin. Completely Natural Cleaning for Your Baby. Every caregiver wants what’s best for their children and the world they will grow up in. Studies show that children are disproportionately affected by daily exposures to toxic chemicals. But caregivers often had to choose between products that worked and products that were healthy for their baby and the planet. Until now. When chlorine and chlorine derivatives are used in industrial processes (such as bleaching paper and wood pulp), they produce substances called chlorinated hydrocarbons, which can persist in the environment, accumulate in animals and people, and can be toxic to human and environmental health. Hypoallergenic, whitened without chemicals containing chlorine, unscented, and alcohol free, Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Baby Wipes are perfect for around the house. Seventh Generation Baby Wipes are moistened with natural aloe vera, vitamin E, and water to cleanse gently and naturally. Unlike many traditional baby wipes, ours are fragrance free, not bleached with chemicals containing chlorine and do not contain alcohol or synthetic ingredients that can irritate baby’s skin.

Leading Your Children to Good Spending Habits

A lot of parents today offer their children a monthly sum of money at a young age. This may be regarded as an effective method since children would be conscious about the better use of cash and simultaneously comprehend how to make savings. Upbringing children this way may be, in time, another factor to raise their developing curves.

When children reach 6 years of age, they may perhaps be prepared to admit the idea of obtaining an allowance and being accountable for it. Generally, at a tender age, children might not be totally aware about how they’re going to spend their money. Consequently, some bad conclusions might occur. Fortunately, these are interpreted as being part of the ‘getting accustomed’ stage. Being still very young, children are entirely ignorant and hence lack the ability to think as adults. Sound manipulation of their allowance may be a little hard in the beginning. However, in time, children may find spending easy, therefore maintaining an equilibrium between spending and keeping some money aside.

Furthermore, granting children the chance to manage money earlier in their life can be a decisive advantage. As mentioned, children commit spending errors early on. A lot of grownups today have fallen under huge debts because of risky expenses. Should they have acquired saving manners since they were children, probabilities are that they might not have been in a stressful situation. Children who learn about a good spending spree since childhood turn out to be great money savers in the future. For example, children who have been taught to drive a car while still young could become great drivers in the future.

Moreover, parents differ from one another. So, the allowance they decide to give their children may as well differ. In some cases, a few parents might prefer to provide their children allowance depending on the tasks they perform. In this case, parents could be possibly aiding their children to recognise the importance of working. In other words, one has to work to earn money. Alternately, some parents want to allow their children the money by looking at their results or even their age. Then again, other parents decide to give their children the money when they require it. In this case, it may be advisable to create an agenda. A fine thought would be to supply children with an allowance at the least one time per week.

As soon as this is done, children would be aware about the extent they can spend. Also, children would be conscious about their expending ability, thus might not wish to purchase a lot of stuffs. Children would then be geared up to confront life when they turn into adults, particularly once they begin to work. Having beforehand an experience concerning the skillful managing of money since being children, such adults may seldom be in financial troubles. As a matter of fact, it is advisable that parents bring up their children accordingly.

Staying financially secure and free from debts can be considered as one of the most peaceful ways to live.

Boosting the Brain Development Trends in Children

As children grow, they form their own way of thinking and tend to develop their own sets of behaviours and habits. Different children tend to develop in a different manner. This could be mainly due to the way parents nurture their children. For instance, well cultured children would show better manners than those who have not enjoyed from a sound parental guidance. As a matter of fact, a great way for parents to help their children is to help them in improving their mental strengths.

First of all, books are fine tools to power up the mental characteristics of children. So, parents can persuade their children to read a lot of books. Today, one may easily find books especially designed for children. Some books might as well feature word games such as crosswords or word searches. These could be sound exercises to help children enhance their focus as they normally have to think before giving out the answer. Children who perform such tasks on a regular basis end up having a good logical thinking after a while.

Furthermore, parents could make their children undergo memory exercises to increase their brain development. As such, memory exercises may be considered as the easiest means to allow children develop their intellect. Activities consist of making children write, read and remember their names. Children are as well made to bear in mind their addresses and contact information. In addition to, several memory improving exercises exist. These include remembering poems and songs among others. Developing the memory since a young age can vastly aid children to grasp information easily. This will also help children at school as they will need good memory when doing Mathematics or Science.

Moreover, another remarkable activity to develop the children mind may be to make them use their least utilized hand for writing or even drawing purposes. With this type of exercise done at regular intervals, children may then be able to widen the other half of their brain. In time, this will be a good thing for children as they would start to use both sides of their brain to carry out a task, such as homework or Maths questions. By doing this, children would effectively succeed to develop the most vital part of their body.

Also, books remain one of the best ways to enhance and boost the way children learn. Books, if read most of the times, would inevitably allow children to establish fine language and communication skills. Encouraging children to read more and more books could be an advantage as nowadays normal education includes the manipulation of a computer. Computers are being used practically everywhere. You find them in hospitals, offices, schools and in most other places. This proves that children should get acquainted to technology since an early age to prevent the arousal of future dilemmas.

With the advent of the Internet, computers have become even more important. Therefore, it remains of paramount importance that children know how to access the invaluable information that are obtainable online.

Advantages of a Daycare with Voluntary Pre Kindergarten or VPK in Carrollwood, Tampa, 33625

When looking for a childcare facility for your four year old son or daughter in Carrollwood, Tampa, 33625 it would be best to choose a learning center that also offers the VPK or Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program already integrated in its daycare service. It will result in numerous advantages for your child.

The Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program is a free program in the state of Florida which was signed into law in January of 2005. The pre school program has been designed as a preparatory step that teaches children the skills necessary for pre-reading, pre-math, language and social interaction. The VPK is a response to the scientific fact that between the age of four and five, the most important developments are happening in a child’s brain growth. In this period, the child develops the ability to focus attention and the ability to follow directions. All these developments have been proven to be maximized by structured learning.

Child development experts have long established that children who have undergone early childhood education programs of excellent quality later exhibit much better performance in school. Even from the Kindergarten level, they show language skills and social skills that are more developed, score much higher in tests for school readiness, and show less problems in behaviour. These children are seen as good students who are strong readers and who have internalized a long term love for learning. They are foreseen to have a higher likelihood of succeeding in their academic future.

In the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program law, the various responsibilities for the program have been assigned to different agencies that lead and guide the many school districts, early learning coalitions and public and private providers of the VPK program. Day-to-day management is the responsibility of the Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI); the issuance of licenses and credentials is the responsibility of the Department of Children and Families (DCF); the standards, curriculum, and accountability is the responsibility of the Department of Education (DOE).

The Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program is given in two ways. During the school year, it is given as a program that has 540 instructional hours. In summer, it is given as a program with 300 instructional hours.

The law requires the VPK Program to have a class size of not more than 18 children if given during the school year. If given in summer, the VPK class size should not be more than 10 children. In both cases, the ratio should always be at least one instructor for every 10 children.

The law also requires that all instructors in the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program for the school year should hold one of the following degrees – either an associate in child development or an associate in a separate field but with six hours credit on child development or early childhood education – in addition to experience in education or child care for children up to age eight equivalent to 480 hours.

To teach in the Summer VPK Program, instructors are required to be a current holder of a Florida Educator Certificate. Alternatively, they should have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in early childhood education, pre-kindergarten or primary education, preschool education, or family and consumer science.

If you prefer a Christian facility for your childcare, you might want to consider bringing your child to A Brighter Future Child Development and Learning Center in Carrollwood, Tampa, 33625. It is a daycare center that accepts children from the age of 6 weeks to 11 years old. A Brighter Future Child Development and Learning Center incorporates the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Program in its program for children from four years old. In addition, it also has after school child development programs for children in K1, K2, K3, and K4. This ensures that the excellent foundation given through the VPK Program is followed in the succeeding after school child development programs. What better childcare would you want?

Teaching Your Children How to Live a Healthy Lifestyle

Children are innocent beings at the tender age. This means that they are still very young to comprehend the different aspects of life. It is therefore the task of parents to properly guide their children in their everyday life so that they can become better adults in the future. Everyone can tell you, health is really crucial. So, it is significant to teach your children how to live a healthy lifestyle right from the beginning.

Feeding children with solids from the start can be considered as a disadvantage. When children get used to eating solids, then you might notice processed meals and fast foods as well becoming part of their diets. This can seriously affect the health of children. Fast foods, in no means offer the right nutrients that children need. Even for adults, fast foods represent a disadvantage if consumed regularly. They contain too much fat and can eventually lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. So, teach your children to stay away from fast food as much as possible.

Moreover, cooking at home can really be a fine idea. Doing this will keep your children away from processed or easy food. When cooking at home, make it a fun exercise. Let your children help you in the process of cooking. For instance, if you prepare a homemade pizza let your children help you with the cooking procedures. Pizzas can be fun and healthy for children if cooked at home. The preparation time is not much, so children will not be bored while waiting for the food to cook.

Furthermore, another way to get your children a healthy lifestyle is to encourage them to practice sports activities. Help your children to exercise. For instance, you could teach them jogging. On the other hand, you could instruct your children the different techniques of playing football. If you notice that your children have an interest in football, you could make them become supporters of your favourite team. This will encourage your children to play football having in mind that one day they could become as good as the players they see on TV or during a match at the stadium.

Increasing awareness among your children can be considered as a wise idea. In other words, right from the early age, when children start to understand meanings, you can talk to them about how bad it is to smoke or drink. Smoking is really dangerous to the health and tends to affect people with lung cancer and heart attack. Explaining this to your children from the beginning will orient their minds not to go towards such bad habits when they become older. You, as a parent, should always try to monitor your children and guide them in the best possible way to become healthy adults.

With good health one will have the possibility to achieve many things in a lifetime. That is why it’s vital that children are taught the best habits. With good awareness, eating habits and sports activities among others, children may turn out to be very healthy adults for the future.

When Should Children Start Learning to Read?

Most western countries start primary school education at age six. That is the age at which we believe most children can start learning to read. However, some children arrive at primary school already able to read. This does not happen by chance. Invariably, these children’s parents have made an effort to teach them.

If these children can learn to read before they even start primary school, why do we wait until six years old before children start learning at school? The answer is that education authorities have to make a practical decision. Younger children need more care and attention. It takes more resources to teach younger children and it costs more money. Most children are ready to start learning to read before age six but a few are not ready. The education authorities choose this age because it is when almost all children are ready to start learning to read. It is an age when children are becoming more independently capable and able to learn in a classroom environment.

The education authorities decide that six years old is a suitable age to start teaching children to read. It is a practical decision and the right one. That does not mean that children cannot start learning to read before this age. It just means that if parents want their child to have a head start in literacy skills then it is their responsibility to teach. All children develop at their own pace but generally, it is possible teach children to read or at least lay the foundations before age six.

Teaching younger children demands a personal touch. It requires patience, imagination, creativity and perseverance. This is a skill that parents need to develop as they work with their child. However, there is no doubt that with time and effort, parents can give their children a head start in literacy development before they start primary school.

Research has shown that children start developing the cognitive visual skills to identify the complex shapes of letters from as early as age two. A few children read their first words by age three and some can read simple sentences by age four. These children are advanced but this is usually due to the effort their parents put in to teaching them. Almost all children can learn the alphabet and to read a few words before age six. It is just a question of how much effort and time parents are willing to spend teaching their child.

A head start in literacy skills is an advantage children can carry into the rest of their lives. It makes their early schooling experience more positive and boosts their self-esteem. Contrastingly, children who start primary school and find they are already bottom of the class can develop negative attitudes to schooling that impact their educational development for years to come. One of the greatest gifts a parent can ever give their child is a sound early base in reading and writing.

Parents Monitor Your Children

There is a wide generation gap on Internet usage between parents and children and the gap continues to grow as more children are introduced to computers and the Internet. Recent figures show that 90% of school-age children have access to computers either at home or at school (National Center for Education Statistics September 2006). While this is great for learning and becoming technologically advanced it has become a source of danger to our children. The danger stems from the fact that the majority of our children are allowed unsupervised access to the Internet. It is reported that one in five child, in the over eight age group, has a computer in their bedroom and this is where the problem emanates. As a rule of thumb, computers should be in areas that are accessible to the family; no computers in bedrooms of young children (under 13 years). While this injunction may not work in some cases, such as when children are alone at home after school, there are safeguards that parents can enact to keep their children safe. The main resource is the use of programs such as SpectorSoft Computer Monitoring Software. According to a leading computer magazine, Spector Pro, a product of SpectorSoft, is the most powerful and complete monitoring software on the market. An additional attribute is that Spector Pro Software is available for both Windows and Mackintosh Operating Systems.

Ideally, all parents should know how to monitor their children’s Internet usage, but they often have no idea how to do so. Parents are also dangerously unaware of what their children are actually doing online. A survey in the UK suggested that more than half the 9-17 year olds who go online have been exposed to pornographic material – but only one in six parents was aware that their child had ever seen or was aware that this material is so easily accessible on the Internet( UK ChildrenGoOnline July 2004).

At a certain stage in their lives children value their independence but, at the same time, need to establish confidence that parents are there for them, no matter what. It is also important for them to know that their parents have faith and trust in them. These things, that are an integral part of the growing process, present challenges for parents and they are at a lost, sometimes, to juggle all of them at the same time. When in doubt remember that the child’s safety is of paramount importance when the matter of independence versus their safety comes into play. The following should help in the quest to keep children safe on the Internet:

Establish a rapport with your children, talk to them and make them aware that you are listening Provide well rounded activities for your children Do not allow excessive time on the computer for leisure purposes, chats, music, games, etc. Agree with your child on the amount of leisure time spent on the computer and be firm about it. In other words establish a contract with your children. “Site Seeing on the Internet” provided by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides sample language that can be used. Make it a habit, for your child’s sake to check the caller id on your phone to see who is calling your home. Age and maturity may play a role on the level of independence a child may enjoy but, as a general rule, children under 13 years should not be allowed to join chat rooms. Older children who are allowed to go to the Mall and other places unsupervised are not as susceptible to the dangers of the Internet, but supervising/monitoring their activities, if only loosely, is still important. Parents must inform local law enforcement if pornographic material is sent to children under 18 years. The perpetrator is breaking the law if they know that the child is a minor. Monitoring software has the capacity to store information that will help law enforcement to track perpetrators. That is the reason why monitoring software such as SpectorSoft Pro is so very important.

§ Tell your children never to give out identifying information such as family information, home address, school name, or phone number in chat room discussions and when visiting web sites. They shouldn’t even reveal such data in private e-mail unless they know whom they are dealing with. They must also not send out personal or family photos without your permission. It’s best for children to use “screen names” that are different from their own in chat rooms.

§ Warn your children not to respond to messages that are threatening, suggestive, demeaning, or otherwise make you or the child uncomfortable. Tell them to report such messages to you.

§ There’s a saying – it takes a village to raise a child. This saying recognizes the fact that other people such as aunts, uncles and friends can and do contribute in keeping children safe. Grandparents are quite often one of the most important components in raising children. As a matter of fact, quite a number of grandparents have actually taken over the role as primary caregiver. In such cares we can replace the word grandparent with parent.

Beware of the pedophile within your circle of family and friends. Listen to your children and instill in them that they are most important. If your child is uncomfortable with an adult in your circle, beware and speak to the child about his/her discomfort. Unfortunately pedophiles are not only a danger on the Internet but could be in your midst. Encourage your children to be frank about their feelings and particularly young children should be taught to tell if someone touches them inappropriately. Tell your children “No secrets”, especially when they are told “Not to tell”.

Tests and Examinations for Adolescent Girls

Adolescence is the time when girls face many changes as they not only become physically mature, but sexually, too. In order to maintain good health, they need to consult gynecologist, adolescent medicine physician and obstetrician. Adolescents who are sexually active need to get some test done like pelvic examination, Pap test and test for checking sexually transmitted diseases. This helps the early determination of conditions that can affect reproductive, gynecological and sexual health.

Schiller test is conducted where the iodine solution is used to cover the cervix. In colposcopy, colposcope is used to check the cervix and the vagina. Cancer is checked by biopsy. In this a small quantity of cervical tissue is removed and a pathologist checks the tissue for abnormal cells.

The most important test is the Pap test or a pap smear. The cells from the mouth of the womb or the cervix are collected to check for cancer, abnormal cells, infection or inflammation. The detection of abnormalities shows signs of cancer. Therefore it is recommended that every female must take Pap test regularly to check out for invasive cancers in the early stages itself. And if invasive cancer is detected, it can be successfully treated in the early stages. Apart from detecting invasive cancer, other changes, such as cancer cells or dysplasia and inflammation, of the vagina and cervix can also be determined. Inflammation can be caused by pregnancy, abortion, miscarriage, hormones, trichomoniasis infections, viruses, bacteria, yeast infections, and other medication.

The repetition Pap test will be suggested by the gynecologist. When a girl becomes sexually active, she will have to test for cervical cancer after three years of becoming active because it usually takes many years for the significant development of cancer or abnormality. Usually there are some cervical cell changes and transient human papilloma virus infections or HPV infections which are very common. Therefore, a Pap test for cervical cancer is recommended every three years. But women who are under thirty years are at a higher risk of getting HPV infections of higher risk. It would be more feasible if every individual takes advice from her doctor about when she can begin screening, the frequency of the test to be taken, and when she can discontinue the tests.

In a Pap test, if abnormal cells are determined, usually more tests are recommended to detect abnormalities which will require treatment. Abnormal Pap test will be handled differently for adolescents when compared to adults. Usually the low grade cervical lesions will not require any treatment and will go away on their own. That is the reason why the Pap test is repeated after a gap of six to twelve months, after the original Pap test which identifies abnormalities. But this repetition will vary from individual to individual depending on her health status and kind of abnormalities found.

A replacement of the Pap test is thinprep test. It involves new technique for testing cells from the cervix for abnormalities. But the cost of getting a thinprep test done is double the cost of getting Pap test done. The advantage of getting a thinprep test is that it requires to be re-done less number of times and detects lesions in initial stages itself. The cervical cells, instead of getting smeared on a slide, are introduced into a liquid vial. After the filtration of the liquid, the cells from the cervix are examined by being placed on the slide.

From Infancy to Adolescence

From Infancy to Adolescence by Viola Morgan

From infancy to adolescence, environmental influences play a major role in the development of our personality. Similar to animals, our social adaptation is stemmed through the process of observational learning. Therefore we can conclude that most children act on how they see their parents act. If a child happens to see their mother or father drinking wine out of a glass, he or she will probably want to do the same. If a child sees his or her father abusing his or her mother, it’s probable that the child will grow to have an aggressive behavior. Or even, if a child sees his or her mother painting the wall, the child, not knowing any better, will most likely pick up his or her crayon and color the wall. While some parents respond positively to their child’s misbehavior, other parents act negatively, hitting and scolding their child. This is the worst thing to do to a child, for it is the parent’s fault. A child’s brain is not fully developed until he or she, at least, reaches puberty; so a child finds it hard to discriminate between ‘what is right and what is wrong’.

The most popular method of teaching a child ‘right from wrong’ is through punishment. For years, many children have been spanked and severely abused for their misbehavior; but, what many parents do not realize is that punishment is just a temporary suppression of a child’s bad behavior. Author David G. Meyers, also a well-known psychologist, affirmed this in his evaluations with children. For example, a child who learns through spankings not to swear around the house may swear elsewhere. Or, if a child is spanked for accidentally saying a curse word, the child will begin to curse more regularly elsewhere. Therefore, punishment increases a child’s aggressiveness by showing that aggression is a way to cope with problems. It can also create fear, and build feelings of helplessness and depression in a child.

The best way to begin to raise a newborn child is to first develop an intense bond with the child through body contact, such as cradling and holding. The more sensitive and responsive a parent is, the more his or her child will become securely attached. Most securely attached children approach life with a sense of basic trust – a sense that the world is predictable and reliable; so a child who will let his or her parents leave is a child who trusts they will return. Those children with loving, sensitive parents will form a life-long attitude of trust rather than fear.

From ages 1 to 3, when a child is learning to speak and comprehend speech, parents should teach their child that No means No. Parents must make their children believe that they are the authority; but again, avoid punishment. Punishment doesn’t stop the misbehavior; it just temporarily prolongs it. Instead, parents should show their child what is the right thing to do. For example, when a 3 year old child picks up his or her crayon to color the wall because he or she sees their parent painting the wall, the parent mustn’t scold and hit their child; instead, lift up the index finger and say the word “No” then pull out a piece of paper or coloring book and direct their child to color with their crayon on there. Any normal child can understand the word “No“; meaning “Bad Thing. Not Good. I Made A Boo Boo.” Babies become more familiar with the word when they hear it from their parent’s mouth. As a result, throughout the child’s development, he or she will learn that they cannot get everything they want and they cannot just do anything they want.

While developing from a child to an adolescent, parents should give positive feedback and rewards to their children for their good behavior. This also helps shape a child. The more the child sees that he or she is rewarded, the more he or she will most likely continue their positive behavior. They will learn that in order to gain something, one must first earn it. This will prepare them for the competitive world of today and for the future.

In the adolescent stage, the time of transition, there is an onset of rapid growth, developing sexual maturity and a need for social independence. As teenagers, they yearn to know who they are; what’s their purpose and role in the world; and what special qualities and uniqueness they possess.

Most parents, during these teen years, act negatively and are overprotective of their teen because they fear that, as a result of their teen’s confusion, their teen will get into drugs, possibly get pregnant, or drop out of school. Because of the lack of trust, most parent-child relationships grow distant. There is no longer a bond between the child and the parent. That is why parents must be open-minded, encouraging, and understanding. Teach the child to be a leader, tell him or her about sex and the consequences of it, and teach the child that there is no one perfect in this world; we all make mistakes. Tell the child some of your past mistakes so they can understand what you mean.

Hopefully, in the end, you will have raised your son or daughter successfully. As an adult, they can look back on their childhood and say “My father and mother were the best parents a child like me could ever have. They taught me everything I needed to know in life.” And, when they have their children, they will use the same child-rearing method you used.

<a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://mothersprideonline.com/mpride/default.aspx”>‘Kindergarten’</a> is a fun place for a child, a time away from worries and close to fun. While selecting a pre school there are some things which have to be kept in mind. You always want a play school that is safe, educational, as well as entertaining for the child. Another important factor while selecting a kindergarten is ‘will my child like this’. To know if he enjoys in a specific<a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.mothersprideonline.com/mpride/Aboutus.aspx?ID1=0″>pre school</a>, just take him to the school and set him free. Take into account, what sort of toys he enjoys playing with and take notice of the things he loves doing there.

Play is important in a child’s life and it allows him to express himself. So, selecting a play way which is bright, colorful, musical, as well as educational will help your child reach his developmental mile stones.

The skills and attitude a child develops in his pre school effects his whole life. A play school is not only a place for a child to spend time at; it is instead a place for the child to learn new things in a new, fun and creative way. The selection of a right play school is important as the complete personality of the child depends a lot on this phase of his life. The involvement, attention and encouragement a child gets at a pre school, becomes the confidence of the child in his later years.

The role of parent in a child’s <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://mothersprideonline.com/mpride/new_index.html”>pre school education</a> is more than dropping him at school and picking him up. Their active involvement, motivation and appreciation in his pre school learning imbibes self esteem in him along with a sense of being well appreciated. A child, who gains confidence through learning in a fun way at this age in the play way, becomes a lifelong learner, who is eager to learn new things always.

Acne Problems in the Adolescent

Acne in Adolescents

Acne is one of the most common problems in adolescent teens affecting nearly seventeen million people in the United States. Acne is nothing but a disorder involving sebaceous Acne in Adolescents

Acne is one of the most common problems in adolescent teens affecting nearly seventeen million people in the United States. Acne is nothing but a disorder involving sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Acne results from the clogging of sebaceous glands leading to the formation of pimples and cysts. The condition usually begins with the onset of puberty.

Going by the facts, as teens attain puberty the androgens also called male sex hormones are

produced in high number leading to sebaceous glands becoming over active which results in sebum being produced in high proportions.

Sebum, which is nothing but oil is produced by sebaceous glands which travel to the skin surface through hair follicles. But, skin cells block the follicles which results in oil also being blocked. When these hair follicles are blocked it results in the development of skin bacteria known as Propionibacterium Acnes within the follicles which in turn results inswelling of the skin called Acne.

If the hair follicles are partially blocked it results in blackheads. If the follicles are completely blocked they result in whiteheads. But if these plugged follicles are not treated they ultimately burst causing the oil, bacteria and skin cells to spill all over the skin resulting in irritation and formation of pimples. Acne can be shallow as well as deep in various individuals depending on the nature of skin and amount of oil produced.

Causes of Acne

There can be various causes why Acne forms. Apart from rising hormone levels due to puberty it can also be attributed to certain other factors like intake of drugs which contain lithium, barbiturates and corticosteroids. Acne can also be caused due to excess grease and oil in the scalp, due to cooking oil and use of some cosmetics can actually alleviate the acne problem. Acne problem many times is inherited also.

Acne problem is worsened if the pimples are squeezed or scrubbed too hard.

Acne can form at any place on the body but they most commonly form in the areas where the sebaceous glands are present in high proportions such as face, chest, shoulders, neck and upper back.

The symptoms may differ from person to person but commonly seen symptoms are: formation of blackheads, whiteheads, lesions filled with pus and which are very painful and lastly nodules. One may get confused sometimes as symptoms of acne may be like some other skin condition and it is always advised to consult a doctor in this scenario.

Some of the treatments for acne

The primary goal of the treatment is to reduce scars and better appearance. There are various treatments and the doctor decides which specific treatment you need based on: the extent of acne problem, age, medical history, overall health, tolerance to specific medications and procedures, expectations and last but not the least what patients prefer.

Treatment of acne is classified into topical and systemic drug therapies which are given based on extent of severity. In some instances the combination of both the methods might be the way to go for acne treatment. Topical medication is nothing but creams, gels, lotions, solutions etc. prescribed to patients for acne treatment.

Some of the examples of topical medication are: Benzoyl Peroxide which kills the Propionibacterium Acnes bacteria, antibiotics helps in stopping or slowing down the growth of the bacteria and also reduces inflammation, Tretinoin helps in stopping the formation of new acne lesions and Adapalene reduces formation of comedo.

Systemic drug therapies involve prescription of systemic antibiotics primarily for the treatment of acne problem which is moderate to severe in nature. The examples of antibiotics prescribed are Doxycycline, erythromycin and tetracycline. In some cases an oral drug called Isotretinoin is prescribed for teenagers with severe acne problem which shrinks down the sebaceous glands that produce oil.

The results are pretty good and almost ninety percent of the adolescents have success with this oral drug. But the drug has some serious side-affects and thus it is very important that one consults a doctor before use.

How Are You Behaving in Front of Your Children

Do you find yourself doing thing in front of your children that to you seems to be normal but is not normal to other people.

Quarrelling in front of your children

Are you quarrelling in front of your children in different situations such as when you are home, in the car, when you are shopping or at a restaurant?

You are teaching your children because you feel and it is alright to vent your feeling out in public no matter who it hurts.

Hurtful names in front of your children

Are you calling hurtful names in front of your children hoping to hurt your mate emotional so they will know how it feel to get hurt and the children is in the room will you are doing this.

Later on your children will call you the same names because they will think that it is acceptable.

Do you find yourself blaming the other

Do you find yourself blaming your mate in front of the children because of the difficulties you have with spending money.

In blaming your mate for what happening you teach your children to be a victim and to blame others for what it is happening in their life without taking their responsibility.

Disappointed in your mate

Do you show that you are disappointed in your mate in front of your children and verbally or physically express this in front of your children?

Talking bad in front

Do you find yourself talking bad saying hurtful thing in front of the children when your mate has left the room because you feel that it is easier than if your mate was standing in front for that would create more confrontation.

Throwing things

Do you find when you get upset in front of your children you throw things at your mate even if it is a little thing.

Screaming

Are you a person when you get upset even in front of your children you screaming but you do not realize that you are screaming?

Being inconsistent

Do you find that you are inconsistent with things you say and do in front of your children if yes you are giving a wrong message to your children?

Your children needs guidance that will carry them in to a better relationship when they grow up and when you are saying one thing and doing another you leave the children with a feeling of insecurity.

Scaring your mate

Do you find yourself scaring your mate with your outburst of anger in front of your children and is this what you want as an outcome.

This attitude changes your children history for the future and how they see or believe what a relationship is about.

Verbally aggressive

Are you verbally aggressive to your mate in front of your children and they are not so sure how to behave because they do not know if they are next.

Do you find the way your mate talk to you triggers feeling in you that you find difficult to control and your behaviour is affecting your children because most of the time it is happening in front of them.

Not listening

If you feel that the only way to get your point across because you do not feel that your mate is listening to what you have to say screaming in front of your children is not the way to go because you are teaching them that about how to conduct themselves in a relationship when they do not feel heard.

Time out

Know that when you are emotionally charge you may not be thinking logically of what to say, how to form the right words to your mate in front of the children so it is better a time out so both of you can resume the conversation without the children around.

Conclusion: How you behave in front of your children affects them in either a positive or negative way and changes how they perceive the world and how they will behave in their relationships.

Loner Jack Reacher gets a lift from seductive Carmen Greer, but it comes with a few hitches: a dangerous husband, a small town with secrets, and a plan. Now Reacher’s part of it, and before the sun sets, the ride could cost Jack and Carmen their lives.Jack Reacher is Spenser before Robert Parker domesticated his Boston PI–in fact, Reacher’s even tougher than Hawk. He can inhale and exhale a few times and pump up his muscles so they make a bad character think twice about tangling with him. And he’s spent enough time on the right side of the law to know how to operate in the gray zone if that’s what it takes to save the fair maiden, punish the bad guys, and right any other wrongs he happens to encounter in the course of his wanderings. Echo Burning is vintage Lee Child, a smartly paced, intricately plotted, and masterfully characterized thriller starring Reacher, the ex-military cop who’s so concerned about commitment to anything–a woman, possessions, a permanent address–that he only owns the clothes on his back. But he’s the kind of justice-seeking guy you’d want on your side, especially if you were an abused wife trapped in a marriage you can’t get out of until, and unless, somebody bumps off your old man.

Reacher’s sympathetic, but he’s not crazy. Nonetheless, he allows himself to be drawn into beautiful Carmen Greer’s orbit, which ought to teach a guy not to hitchhike. Agreeing to protect her from the husband who’s about to be released from jail and, according to Carmen, who’s about to pay her back for tipping off the authorities to the tax fraud that landed him in prison, Reacher moves into the bunkhouse of the Echo, Texas, ranch that’s owned by the bigoted, bitter, but powerful Greer family, which despises Carmen because she’s Mexican and tolerates her only because she’s Sloop Greer’s wife and the mother of his child. The expected bloodshed ensues, but it’s Sloop, not Carmen, who ends up with a bullet in his head. Reacher’s convinced that Carmen acted in self-defense, even after other evidence comes to light that suggests there’s more–and less–to her unhappy tale than even her own lawyer believes. This is the best Jack Reacher yet, smart, stylish, and convincing. If it’s your first encounter with Child’s work, be sure to check out his backlist–Running Blind, Tripwire, etc. –Jane Adams
